Blog Synopsis
The age old image of a teacher standing at the front of a class teaching is becoming a vision of the past. Students need learning managers to be technology savvy to enable them to be engaged in their learning experiences and achieve positive learning outcomes. Technology is an evolutionary development that will continue to evolve. As we move into the 2000 epoch we need to be aware that Society has experienced many changes since the idea of schooling first came about. The change from industrial base to knowledge base society has had an enormous impact on the socio-economic profile. The school system still operates under long held traditions of an industrial based society, causing mindset constraints. This also helps us see the need for a disruptive mindset to take place. To be workplace ready, futures oriented and prepared to cope with a knowledgeable and creativity-based economy. There is a need for learning managers /teachers to possess a new mindset to approach education in the 2000’s epoch.
As stated in Kearsley and Shneiderman’s learning engagement theory. “The fundamental idea underlying engagement theory is that student’s must be meaningfully engaged in learning activities through interaction with others and worthwhile tasks,” (Kearsley and Shneiderman, 1999). E-learning facilitates the use of information communication technology to effectively engage our students in meaningful learning experiences.
We as Learning Managers need to ensure we are giving our students the best possible chance to obtain the desired learning outcomes in an environment that enables students to feel that they have some control over their learning journey. This brings us back to Kearsley and Shneiderman’s learning engagement theory “relate, create, donate” (Kearsley and Shneiderman, 1999) focusing on collaboration, creativity and contribution. These attributes will enable students to be futures oriented with high order thinking skills, thus able to cope with life outside of school.
Being aware of the socio-economic diversity facing students in an ever changing world makes our task even more challenging. Students come from a wide variety of backgrounds including, socio-economically advantaged/disadvantaged, religion, cultural, those with learning disabilities etc… as long as we remain aware of the fact that all students are capable of achieving desired learning outcomes, hopefully we will engage our students and achieve those outcomes.
As Learning Managers we need to provide a student centered approach to our teaching in order to achieve a healthy academic rapport with our students. This rapport is important if we are to get to know the learning styles of our students. Knowing students learning styles will help us to tailor the learning experiences to each student.
Using blogs in the classroom would also enable Learning Managers to get to know their students better. If students were asked to blog their learning journey, Learning Managers would be informed of the students attitudes and perceptions of what he/she is being taught. With an aim to being student focused and futures oriented, the insight from this knowledge would allow Learning Managers to create engaging learning experiences, which used pedagogic strategies to ensure learning outcomes are achieved for all students.
Wiki’s are a fantastic opportunity for students to collaborate and could facilitate whole class group discussions/suggestions/ideas. Students can contribute without feeling inadequate or being singled out, thus allowing students to feel accepted by teacher and peers alike. Wiki would encourage creative thinking while engaging students in classroom tasks that relate to students interests and goals. Using wiki students are able to collaborate on the task requirements and what is expected in relation to learning experience outcomes, giving students clarification. Learning Managers would be able to provide positive constructive feedback to students whilst ensuring the students are remaining on task. Helping students recognize that they have the ability to reach the desired learning outcomes.
Using interactive whiteboards in the classroom enables Learning Managers to engage their students using technology that is relevant. Students are technology savvy from a very young age and are capable of relating their learning experiences to the real world via technology. Interactive whiteboards enables students to perceive the task as relevant helping them to develop and understand positive attitudes and perceptions within the learning journey. This encourages students to push the limits of their knowledge and ability by encouraging creative thinking and the ability to acquire and integrate knowledge. Students would also gain the skills to plan appropriately, identify and use resources available to them, helping them to use their knowledge meaningfully and to extend and refine that knowledge. It is therefore imperative that Learning Managers use this technology to the fullest potential.
Other e-learning tools such as Voki, , Flickr, picnic, power point, you tube etc…all provide endless possibilities. Voki is a very creative way to tell a short story, weather you are a student or a teacher. Students could present their Voki as an introduction to an oral presentation or Learning Managers could use it to introduce the next block of work. Students are able to use this tool easily, it is extremely user friendly.
Flickr could be used to show a students learning journey through building an on-line photo album. Learning managers would need to acquire appropriate permission to display photographs of students on the internet. Students would be able to post photos of various learning experiences including classroom activities, camps, outings, and interests while giving a description of what the images represent.
Picnik enables students to enhance their photo’s adding personal touches (create) posting images to Flickr or a blog etc… (donate) relating to personal experiences on their learning journey (relate).Students are able to verbalize their perceptions of their images encouraging declarative knowledge. Asking students to comment respectfully/constructively on their peers images will encourage students to use their critical thinking skills, ensuring students are aware of these skills.
You tube is another great resource as the possibilities of use are endless. Students could use you tube as a means of creating and presenting their work, providing them with a whole e-learning experience. This work could be meaningful to an organization, company, person/persons etc… outside of the school, or reflect the interest of the student/class. Learning Managers are able to use you-tube as a means of demonstration, introduction, research and general class presentations.
Information communication technology facilitates all aspects of engagement.
Undertaking Managing E-learning as part of my learning journey, I have realized how invaluable technology can be. I have been extremely frustrated by some aspects of the technology and totally elated by others. Had I had the tuition that suited my preferred learning style I would have coped a lot easier with the learning experiences. I feel that my learning outcomes would also have benefited. I can honestly say that I felt meaningfully engaged and that my tasks were worthwhile. The addition of collaboration for assessment purposes made me feel that I was not alone in the way I was feeling. I trust that this assessment of my personal learning journey will help me to become a better Learning Manager, having experienced an engaging, challenging learning journey.
Throughout this journey I have contacted my lecturer in regards to links not working correctly. With my peers I have discussed course content, collaborated on assignments, as well as expressed my frustrations and elation's. I have left hopefully constructive comments on some of my fellow student’s blogs, collaborated via wiki and mahara. This course has a lot of content and I found that I was spending a lot of time looking at the new technology introduced in the course. Having gained the knowledge to use this technology I feel I would be able to use it to its fullest potential, providing I remain up to date and futures focused with a new mindset towards Learning Management. Upon the completion of my Bachelor of Learning Management I would want to possess the skills and attributes to be able to engage my students and create positive learning outcomes for those students, by being knowledgeable, work place ready, adaptive, innovative, creative, student centered, using technology, having high order thinking skills, evaluation/critical reflection skills, being willing to accept change and become a lifelong learner. Learning managers of the future will need the skills to create a pedagogical performance to achieve desired learning outcomes.
Being futures oriented and workplace ready in collaboration with capability are things we as future Learning Managers need to achieve. We have the opportunity to achieve these goals and become the teachers of tomorrow.

You tube has so much potential! I feel that using this technology would enable me to engage my students at a greater level. If I were to stand at the front of the class and drone on about how to do things, I am sure that my students would lose interest quickly. Using you tube to demonstrate a skill allows me to replay any part a student may have difficulty with as many times as I like.
Google earth was very interesting, as it allows you to look at so much. The technology is amazing, you can look at any country, city, town, streets, galaxies, oceans, mountains, canyons etc...not only in the sense of seeing a picture, but being able to manipulate a 3d image in order to gain information about the particular place you are looking at. Students could create a virtual tour of thier school to show to pen pals in another country. The research possibilities are also endless, geography, geology, global warming, oceanic movements, space, astrology etc...
Wikipedia was interesting to say the least. This would be a fantastic site if the information was reliable. I would encuorage students not to use this site for research purposes only, but rather a starting point. The useful part was to be able to create a word bank or a mind map of information to follow up research using reliable sources. Being able to edit this site allows room for error, although if students found that they had information that is worth adding, it would allow the students to donate their learned information.
Slideshare has not been one of my favourite learning experiences. I found it frustrating to use, although I must say, that I would like to learn how this technology works as I feel it would be a valuable resource in the classroom. Students would be able to create slide shows in order to show knowledge and understanding of learning experiences. They would be able to submit their work via a blog if that were the preferred method.
I felt Incompetech was a good site to use to teach students about stealing other people's work. I also downloaded a piece of rock music titled 'Zap Beat' I could use this music as an upbeat way to do some brain exercises in class. I found this book 'Brain Gym Teacher's Edition'
(By Paul and Gail Dennison) rather interesting. http://www.braingym.com.au/index.php?page=cart&cart_section=product&cart_product_id=574

U tube
I am currently working with a year 9 special education home economics class. This u-tube presentation would be a great way to show my students the steps required when following a reciepe. It has step by step, easy to follow instructions. Being a u-tube presentation, if a student had difficulty grasping a particular step, I could replay that part as many times as necessary.

Take 2
This is my second attempt at uploading a power point presentation. Unfortunately slideshare does not support animations or sound (http://getsatisfaction.com/slideshare/topics/hi_i_have_a_pps_which_contains_animation_and_music_imbegded_in_the_presentation_the_slide_show_was_also_set) In order to upload this power point a second time I have chosen to go with authorSTREAM as mentioned in the link above. Unfortunately using authorSTREAM I could not get the sound to load. I have also been unable to use 'Synchronisation Workspace' in slideshare to enable the sound. I have managed to create an audio to go with this power point so I will continue work on this issue.
As you can see I have chosen to do a power point on a place I have visited. If my learning experience required students to create a power point using their own images, I would demonstrate using a piece of work that was similar to what I expected from my students.
I have again been working on getting sound to my power point, but to no avail. Apparently I would have to remove the animations for slideshare to work and authorstream has poor instruction for this task.
I am extremely frustrated by the amount of time wasted on this activity. I feel that the technology here is limited and the site has been difficult to navigate. the instructions on our course description advised that we use 'Synchronisation Workspace', I could not locate this application, I also found this site hard to navigate. Uploading the power point was the easy part, trying to do anything with it was the frustrating part. Again user or program?

Frustrated!
How frustrating is it, when you cannot access a site that has been recommended for educational purposes? It makes me feel inadequate when it comes to the task at hand. If I were in a teaching environment, using this technology, I would feel that I had wasted my students time if a site did not work properly. How frustrated would students be, if they spent most of thier lesson trying to access information that was not available? I find that a lot of time spent on-line could be wasted waiting for sites to load. Only to discover this web site has expired or this site is unavailable at this time etc... Don't get me wrong, information communication technology is a wonderful tool. We can certainly keep up with the times using this technology. Students of the 21st century are definitely up to date with this technology and would be the first ones to teach us how to use it. If we are to be honest, we are all learners in life.

After uploading this presentation, the animations and sound seem to not be working. Also the wording is misplaced and distorted. I am wondering if it a case of user or program that has caused these problems. I will investigate and hopefully rectify this problem.

Flickr and Picnik

I have decided to upload the before and after photo so that anyone having a look at it can see the great job picnik does of enhancing phots. I found these sites so much fun! I was surprised at how easy it was to change, enhance, correct, chop, re-colour photo's etc
Flickr and picnik are amazing, kids would have a ball on these sites! As far as learning tools, I think that incorporating this technology into a lesson plan would be beneficial to all students.
Students could use photographs to keep an online diary of their learning journey, they could document their family history or just have a lot of fun changing the way they look in their photo.
Again the possibilities are endless.

wow lets catch up!
I can't believe how much is involved in E-Learning! I am having fun learning all this new technology but I am so frustrated by it at the same time! I am having trouble uploading my power point presentation or creating a link. I am sure that when I figure out how it works, I will be very confident, but at present I feel very frustrated!!! I can envisage my future students being frustrated if they were asked to preform a task...and I as their learning manager were not fully up-to date with the technology I am using...failing to keep them engaged! When using technology it would be imperative to be comprehensive with the technology used. Technology is already in our class rooms, as most private school students have a laptop. Public school students are yet to receive theirs(surprise, surprise) We do have a couple of classes at the public school I work at that have laptops but I feel that the technology is wasted. We have projectors in every class room, but our school could not afford the cables to connect teachers to the projectors and therefore they are useless. The few interactive whiteboards that our school has are extremely under used due to the lack of technology elsewhere in the school. I feel that this transition period that we are facing will eventually catch up to technology, but unfortunately it will be at the expense of our current students. Some of the current teachers are aware of the importance of technology in the classroom, but others are so unaware of the changes in society , let alone technology that they are oblivious to the fact that their students require more interaction with technology.Lets face it kids today are technology savvy. To become learning managers of the 21st century we will need to acquire the skills and attributes to engage our students. These skills and attributes will definitely involve being technology savvy! There are so many applications suited to involving students in engaging learning experiences, that as a learning managers we would be spoilt for choice! Video, voki, power point, u tube, skype, web cams, pod casts, facebook, i chat the applications are endless!!! Children of tomorrow will be workplace ready and futures oriented, with high order thinking skills. We as learning managers will help them achieve the desired learning outcomes using up-to date information and technology!
To engage my students with what I have learned recently I feel that the possibilities are endless. I would hope to engage my students in choosing what they are interested in and modeling a learning experience around what excites them. I know that not all students would be enthusiastic about the same things, but encouraging them to have a go may spark interest that drives them towards a positive learning outcome. Keeping in mind that not all students learn in the same manner. Being student centered is not a hard task! I feel that if you listen to your learners and take time to get to know them, you would find it easier to accommodate their learning needs and abilities, producing positive learning outcomes for all.
cheers

Power point will be a useful tool that will easily enable students to work collaboratively on projects that are meaningful outside of the classroom. In order to support students in their learning journey we need to provide learning experiences that enhance and support student's social development and participation. Student's need to feel that they have contributed in a meaningful way to the learning process to obtain positive learning outcomes and a sense of personal achievement.
As a student, I felt that I had achieved a great deal by the time I finished creating my power point presentation. The presentation was fun and easy to create, I found the most challenging thing was to come up with an idea. Putting music to the power point was a little challenging, as I had difficulty finding the right process to make the music play across all of the slides. Once I had found this feature it was relatively simple to achieve. I feel that my digital immigrant status restricts me on occasion, although it was certainly engaging. (I just hope I can upload it for you all to watch)
Cheers Trish

more on week 4
Hi All,
I hope you are all having fun! I have sent avatars to all my friends they are great stuff. I have learned a lot this week and in reflection I feel that as learning managers of the 21st century we are faced with a lot of controversy. Technology is a wonderful thing, I'm all for technology in our schools, but what about the kids that don't have access to this resource? How do they get the opportunity to interact with fellow students and their teachers to achieve viable learning outcomes? In the state school where I work, computer labs are so hard to book. Students get very little access to computers at school, it becomes quite frustrating for teachers and students alike. The students rarely get time to finish their work, and those who have no access to a home computer are disadvantaged in regards to completing the task. How do we keep these students engaged if they don't have access to the right equipment?
You would be quite amazed at the amount of students that do not have home computers.
Blogs, wiki's Avatars and Mahara are all fantastic learning tools,in an ideal world it would be great to help students on-line if they needed it, the students would learn to interact and help each other, creating learning outcomes as well as team building and learning to network. In today's knowledge based economy I feel it's important to help students become futures oriented and gain a higher level of thinking. Again I ask how do we keep these students engaged, if they don't have acess to the right equipment?
Just a little thought to ponder
Cheers

Hi All,
I have had a look around the mahara site and I am amazed. Do we need anything else? That site is incredible. It's like a one stop site. It was very easy to use and extremely versatile. Anyway more on this later.I have only just begun to discover this wonderful technology and thought I would share my enthusiasm.
Cheers

week3
Hi Everyone,
OMG! I can't believe how little I know about technology. This week has been both exciting and frustrating as I have muddled my way through blogging, RSS and wiki. I feel so inspired I want to tell everyone how great this technology is! I feel that integrating these tools into the classroom would encourage all students to be engaged. I found all three tools easy to set up, use and navigate. Wiki would be an excellent tool to implement the "engagement theory""engagement theory is based upon the idea of creating collaborative teams that work on ambitious projects that are meaningful to someone outside the classroom"(Greg Kearsley & Ben Shneiderman) The use of "relate, create, donate" enables students to work with others from differing backgrounds allowing a greater understanding of socio-economic diversity. Imagine giving students a task where they needed to gather information from various ICT's and discuss how this information relates to their learning journey's both individually and as a group. The wiki can be used as the main discussion board to help all students to understand the task and relate to their fellow classmates. They could then blog their individual summaries and use a RSS to keep track of and comment on blogs of their classmates. You would have to ensure that there was enough time for students to do this in class time to allow for socio-economic factors(not every student has a computer at home) The information they need to find should be mapped out so as students can easily find the correct information ie:where to find u-tube presentations etc... they can of course ask other students and map their own findings on wiki.
Cheers

Cheers

week 2
Hi All,
I was fascinated by the term "digital natives or digital immigrant"(Prensky 2001) Students of the 21st century have embraced technology and eagerly await future technology. I am a digital immigrant so if I am going to "engage not enrage"(Prensky 2005) my students then I also feel that I need to embrace technology both now and in the future. We don't give students enough credit, they are very capable human beings. This brings me to the subject of internet access. Again I feel that if we educate students on appropriate internet use, they will be capable of using this tool to it's fullest extent. The web puts the world at their fingertips, lets educate them using their preferred method of learning. Net Alert is a wonderful tool for parents but can be extremely frustrating for students, we all want to keep our kids safe but are we suffocating them by not allowing them to use their good judgment, (that has been learned). As learning managers we will undoubtedly find it difficult to engage each and every one of our students. There are many factors to consider, such as ensuring we provide equity and equality of opportunity for all students. This will be an enormous task given the socio-economic diversity in schools. Students come from a wide range of backgrounds including religion, culture, disadvantaged and those with learning disabilities etc...But if we realize that all students are capable of achieving learning outcomes,we will hopefully close the gap between equity and equality. Unfortunately some schools are better equipped than others, which also provides great challenges for learning managers to provide equality.
Cheers Trish

week 1
Hi everyone,
wow! I can't believe I've made it to uni... then I find out I'm doing e-learning. That scared the pants off me, as I am a digital immigrant. My learning style is also kinestetic. I, watch, I try, I learn(flex... what was I thinking!) Any way I survived and am having so much fun. I am learning a lot about what my children know as well. They have been fantastic teachers.
I found the learning style activity interesting as I have studied learning styles in my early childhood career. My personal learning style has basically remained unchanged. Young children however have ever changing learning styles. The fact that we don't all learn the same, means that for learning managers, the learning experiences we offer our students need to be engaging for all learning preferences. ICT's will play a big part in achieving this, but we must remain open to the fact that ICT's may not engage all of our students. It will be up to the learning manager to know which student has what learning style and how best to engage them.
According to Waterhouse(2005) : "e-learning involves improving teaching and learning using instructional strategies enhanced by technology, especially computer technology". I agree with this statement as I feel to be futures orientated we must be flexible and innovative in how we teach. I hope to engage my students and encourage them to think outside the square.
I am hoping the gap between me being a digital immigrant and my students being digital natives, means that I will have the opportunity to learn from those I teach, hopefully creating a strong, learning bond with my students.I also agree with the learning engagement theory "relate, create, donate"(Kearsley1997 & Schniderman1998)giving our students meaningful tasks that relate to them directly, encouraging communication, collaboration and creativity, helping students feel as though they have some control over their learning journeys. Technology can play an important role in helping learning managers to facilitate an engaging learning journey for teachers and students alike.

Synopsis
Hi All,
My synopsis of design to implement the use of blogging in the classroom is as follows: Students could be asked to create their own blog recording their experiences of their school life. As a Learning Manager I could encourage students to think outside the square and hopefully engage them in a higher level of thinking, by asking them to comment on what they like and dislike, what they would like to learn about and how they would like to learn about the things they are interested in etc... Creating a larger bank of possibilities and ideas for lesson plans and learning experiences that would engage the students. Ideally while using ICT's both students and learning managers would gain greatly from this exercise. The learning manager could comment on the students blog encouraging communication skills, writing skills, technology skills etc...
The possibilities are endless......
Cheers

Introduction
Hi everyone,
This is my very first blog. I am a technological immigrant and am having so much fun learning about information communication technologies. I feel that incorporating technology into the classroom is an amazing concept. Kids today have all this information at their fingertips, they are the ones that know technology. As learning managers we need to keep up if we are going to keep them engaged. I'm looking forward to posting more.
Happy learning everyone!
Cheers
